  • Crashes in Love by William Onyeabor (Test Pressing)
    Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Test pressing from the Luaka Bop issue of Crashes in Love by William Onyeabor (5 copies total were made, we will sell three of these). William Onyeabor’s first album, it's a soundtrack to a film we’ve never seen nor met anyone who has. Great record though it’s his least electronic.

NB: Test pressings are what you get from the pressing plant to make sure there is nothing amiss. In the old days they were at times used to send out albums early to radio and press. In the old days stampers, those metal parts that actually press the record would make 15,000 copies before being replaced. Depending how worn a stamper was in the press run could effect how your record sounded. These days rarely are more than 3000 copies pressed with a stamper. Some people collect these. We don't, but we thought we'd see if there was any interest. We'll include some of the notes from the Onyeabor Box set as well, just to give you something to look at.

about

Faith, Hope, and Love stand aloft and towering, above all ancient and modern monuments, from mythology and other books of fame, lasting and enduring beyond all ages, Love holds the key to faith and hope, and conditions the state pf sublime, which is man's ultimate , in his unending struggles for fulfillment and commitment. Without love we are but like hollow drums and our sounds but like cacophony of symbols full of fury.
Composer and arranger, William Onyeabor, a French and American trained, professional film maker, re-echoes through the cuts of this Album, man's unquenching desire to capture and retain that contentment, which love alone imbues, in our complexity of existence, whose understanding is beyond the realms of the faithless, the hopeless and the loveless.
The film "Crashes In Love" by Wilfilms Limited, is the tragedy of an African Princess who turned her back on love which money buys. Most of the cuts of this album are committed to it. Love is the gem that is priceless and cannot be purchased with worthless pieces of paper that only serve a means of exchange. When money buys love, then, of course tragedy normally strikes.
Death is an extension of life hence the story of man becomes complete only after death. The joy of life however, at times pre-empts the pain of death and man goes after the luxuries and riches of this earth as if in fact death will no longer come after life, like night follows day. The composer and arranger views this misplacement of values as a pathetic loss of faith in the ability of man to do good, and create a favourable climate for interaction with his neighbour in love and Harmony. If we knew it all, we shall go after love and not riches. This thought is the theme of the first cut of side one, whose refrain reminds us all (as if we need it to) that fateful day of final surrender. It it "Something you'll never forget."
"Heaven and Hell" carries forth another message of love and kindness, the reward of which is "Heaven the best place for comfort;" Hatred and wickedness, the reward of which is "Hell." Pour our love and kindness to humanity-unlimited, otherwise, as we believe, "Hell would suffer you forever."
"Ride on Baby" is a cut you should spare a few moments and allow its music to completely take you over.
"Jungle gods" is a modified African traditional music which in fact speaks for itself.
